Using Parts From Your Local Hardware to Build a 3D Printer

Always wondered how to build your own low cost 3D printer? Well Jonathan Irwin has gone ahead and done just that with parts that can be found at your local hardware store. Jonathan is a software developer at SovTech during the week and a hardware hacker hobbyist on the weekends. The guide which he produced with his partner, has already amassed almost 80,000 views on Intructables an online hardware DIY community. Watch him and his partner Heine Schlechterbelow giving us the low down on 3D printing on the Tech Busters Show with CNBCAfrica. Video Below.

Printer Overview

Low cost 3D printer that uses drawer runners for linear bearings with no laser cut or 3D printed parts. The printer has a large print volume and the resulting prints are of a very high quality. Print speeds are good too. There is a completely homemade bowden extruder. Only hand tools are used.
The project is well documented and is presented as an Instructable so that others can make it too. It is also a very hackable project that can be made bigger or adapted to use 3d printed parts.
The project is still ongoing as the documentation is not yet complete. The Instuctable page and Hack.io page will be continually updated as more documentation is created and more videos and photos of both the printer and the prints are made.
