This year the theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) is #ChooseToChallenge. The aim of this is to understand, consider and become aware of how easy it is to subconsciously accept social constructs of gender inequality. This year, the IWD theme, #ChooseToChallenge, asks us to make the conscious decision to challenge gender bias.
As we reflect on this year’s IWD theme, we are proud of the many advances we have made towards challenging the stereotypical statistics of women in STEM. SovTech has made a conscious effort to promote equality and inclusivity in the workplace. We’re proud of the fact that the number of women employed has grown exponentially over the past 2 years as well as the number of women in leadership positions. At SovTech, our numbers will tell you that:
We’re also really proud of the fact that in this years’ graduate programme intake there were more women software developers than men, and overall, more than half of this year’s graduate intake are women. The next generation of software specialists is seeing so many more women take up STEM careers!
This year, companies around the world are being urged to #ChooseToChallenge by finding new and innovative ways to create a more diverse work space and encourage collaborative leadership roles. We’re smashing stereotypes with women filling many roles historically fulfilled by men, and vice versa.
SovTech chooses to challenge gender bias and inequality by creating an equal and safe space for every gender. We’re unbelievably proud of the women of SovTech and all their accomplishments, as well as other women in the software and STEM industry who have not only smashed the glass ceiling, but have also been the ‘first’ for so many breakthroughs and achievements. Women like Ada Lovelace, Katherine Johnson, Radia Perlman and more recently, Whitney Wolfe Herd to name but a few.
Whitney Wolfe Herd, the co-founder and CEO of Bumble Inc. recently became the youngest self-made woman billionaire after taking Bumble Inc. public on February 11, 2021. According to Bloomberg, of the 500 wealthiest people in the world, fewer than 5% are women. That may be a depressing statistic, but Wolfe Herd’s success shows the beginning of what could be meaningful change in this regard. We believe that the women in our company all have the potential to do equally great things in tech.
To all the wonderful women out there, work hard, stay strong and carry on creating success in your life. Happy International Women’s Day!
